Veteran in the Spotlight

Before becoming Chairman at Serve and Protect Credit Union, Nigel enjoyed a lengthy career serving our country. In his early years Nigel served in the Armed Forces, working around the world to help protect our nation. Leaving as a Sergeant after 9 years in the Armed Forces, Nigel went onto serve in Devon & Cornwall Police until retirement.

We’ve asked Nigel a few questions about his time serving in the Armed Forces.

  • What made you decide to join the Armed Forces Nigel? The Army offered a chance to explore the world. A structured lifestyle with both purpose and adventure. Opportunities to get paid for playing sport is also attractive!
  • Do you recall your first days in service? What did it feel like? A completely new world compared with University. Early mornings, beastings and sleep deprivation. A degree of apprehension and fear followed by new values, including the importance of team working.
  • How did your service and experiences affect you? A deep feeling of belonging and service. The importance of colleagues and planning. The real value of understanding your environment, adapting and working towards a mission aim. Armed service quickly challenges your lifelong priorities.
  • Did your Armed Forces experience influence your decision to later join the Police? It is all about service and making a difference.
  • And finally, is there anything you miss about serving in the Armed Forces? Serving in the armed Forces is all about full commitment. Therefore, those you serve with become the most important people in your life. The total dedication, service values and shared values builds a comradery which is hard to replace.
