Junior’s Story

How we helped Junior when he needed us most

Meet Junior, a dedicated member of the British Army. When he faced challenging times, we were there to support him. Watch the video above to hear Junior share his inspiring story, or keep reading to find out how we helped him when he needed it most.

A helping hand when it mattered most

Starting a new chapter in life can come with its own set of hurdles. For Junior, moving to the UK and adapting to a new financial system brought unexpected challenges. Like many, he turned to a high street bank for solutions but found himself hitting a brick wall when he needed an emergency loan. What happened next changed everything. Junior was recommended to Serve and Protect by his colleagues.

I moved to the UK a couple of years ago and my first bank account was with Barclays, and I needed an emergency loan and Barclays didn’t offer me the loan because I was new to having a bank account.

Going above and beyond during personal tragedy

Sometimes, life throws challenges you never see coming. For Junior, this came with the loss of his brother and the pressing need to return home to the Caribbean for the funeral. The emotional and financial strain made the situation overwhelming, but when Junior contacted us, we immediately stepped in to help. When he explained his urgent situation, we worked to prioritise his case and ensure he had the funds to travel home.

I told them it’s an emergency because I need to get home for my brother’s funeral, so they pushed for me to get loan as soon as possible so I could travel to the Caribbean!

Building financial stability

Junior’s story began with a need for immediate financial help, and we were there to provide it. But it didn’t stop there. We understand that emergencies are only one piece of the puzzle; building financial stability is just as important. Not only did Junior receive the funds he needed quickly, but he was able to start saving alongside repaying his loan—all managed directly from his salary. This small but meaningful step helped Junior build a safety net for the future.

The best thing about being in the credit union is that I can repay back the loan from my salary, which is pretty good in case I forget a payment.
