The start of a journey
Joining the Royal Navy in January 2021 marked a major life change for Henry. After completing phase one and two of his training, he moved from Coventry to Portsmouth to begin his new chapter.
While the Navy offered incredible benefits, adjusting to a reduced income compared to his civilian earnings was initially challenging. At the time, Henry was juggling the cost of living in the UK, paying rent alongside other expenses, and supporting his family back home in Ghana. With accommodation costs, his children’s school fees, and building projects to maintain, the financial strain started to weigh heavily. He needed help, and that’s when a casual conversation with a friend took an unexpected turn.
Discovering Serve and Protect
During a relaxed discussion with friends, one of them asked Henry if he had heard about Serve and Protect. Intrigued, Henry listened as his friend explained the benefits of the credit union. After his friends recommendations, Henry put in his first loan application to Serve and Protect, and he quickly got the help he needed which allowed him to provide accommodation for his family and pay for his kids school fees.
It was a life saver because it was a moment where I really going into financial challenges. They were actually there at the time I needed them the most.
