Your Partner in Financial Wellbeing
Discover how enabling payroll deduction with Serve and Protect Credit Union can support both individual goals and overall financial wellbeing within your organisation.
At Serve and Protect, we are working with employers across the police, prison, probation, military, fire and health services to make it easier for employees to save regularly and borrow responsibly by enabling payroll deduction.
That’s right! We don’t charge employers at all. It’s also free for your employees to join us!
We’ve worked with leading organisations in the public sector for over 2 decades.
Unlike banks and other institutions, credit unions are for people, not profit.
Did you know that almost half of Brits have £1,000 or less in savings, and a quarter have £200 or less (Source: Finder, 2026). At Serve and Protect, we are working with employers across the police, prison, military, fire and health services to make it easier for staff to save regularly and borrow responsibly by enabling payroll deduction.
Removes Friction
People want to save, but the hardest thing about saving is getting started. Enabling payroll deduction can make it easy for your employees to build a healthy savings habit.
Pay Yourself First
Have you heard of ‘pay-yourself-first’ budgeting? It is a budgeting method where you set aside money to save on your payday before spending on anything else.
Fewer Declines
Automatic repayments result in less defaults and fewer loan declines. In fact, the chances of a payroll deducted loan not being repaid is just 2% compared to 15% for other methods (Source: Inclusion Centre, 2023).
Savings Habits
We encourage all our members to save. Even our members who want to borrow are required to save as well.

Nearly 24 million UK adults have poor financial literacy and just 20% had a good understanding of savings products (Source: Abrdn’s Savings Ladder Index, 2024). As a credit union we offer a range of financial education, both in-person and online.
19% of respondents said they are often or always stressed about their financial situation. The impact this can have on job performance and morale cannot be underestimated. 38% of employees think financial stress among colleagues may affect their job performance or morale.
23% of survey respondents admitted they have been denied a financial service in the past. Many of these members would have had to turn to other lenders as a result. In fact, more than 1 in 10 (15%) of survey respondents admitted they had to take out a payday loan before joining Serve and Protect.
53% of employees believe financial stress may increase colleagues’ vulnerability to exploitation and 35% think it is likely that financial challenges among colleagues could lead to misconduct.

To avoid circumstances where a payday loan or a high-interest loan is the only alternative, these individuals need rapid help and support. Recognising the vulnerability of these people, Serve and Protect has initiated a support mechanism to quickly identify underpinning issues and signpost to relevant organisations that can help. This is an excellent service that Serve and Protect has developed to better look after our people in times of need.
Serve and Protect have been fantastic to work with, delivering Financial Health Workshops to staff, which have been extremely well received. Having Serve and Protect as part of our staff wellbeing offer makes me extremely proud to work for our NHS Trust.
