Understanding the Financial Resilience of our Members
At Serve and Protect Credit Union, your financial wellbeing is at the heart of what we do. We deeply value the vital role our members play in serving and protecting our communities, and we understand the unique challenges you face every day.
This year, for the first time, we set out to better understand the financial resilience of our members. The findings in this report highlight how money worries can seriously affect the ability of those in the Police, Prison, and Military services to do their jobs effectively.
Here are some key insights from the report:
- Life changes can hit hard: 62% of respondents shared that if they faced a significant life change, like a relationship breakdown, unemployment, or illness, they wouldn’t be able to cope financially.
- Police employees need more support: Only 1 in 4 respondents currently or formerly in the police force said they would turn to their employer for help if they were struggling with money.
- Prison and probation staff feel unprepared: Three out of four members working in the prison and probation service feel their employers aren’t doing enough to help them plan for their financial future.
- Military members feel the strain: 61% of military respondents said their personal finances impact their ability to perform their duties effectively.
We know that being financially resilient is key to feeling secure and confident, both at work and at home. Our hope is that this report sparks meaningful conversations—not just with employers in these essential services, but also with our members and the wider Serve and Protect family.
By shedding light on what financial resilience truly means, we aim to highlight how a lack of it can affect individuals and their ability to thrive at work. Together, let’s work towards stronger financial wellbeing for everyone who serves and protects.
